Note: UMKC-Respondus Monitor is being used in a limited capacity at UMKC, but is not widely available.
Important: Giving students advance notice of proctored exams is mandatory - it is required by the HLC and the Code of Federal Regulations in instances where there may be proctoring fees passed on to the student. If you plan to offer proctored exams for your fall classes, please work with your campus Registrar and course schedulers to ensure that your class attributes/notes are updated appropriately.
Questions to ask when choosing proctoring options:
- Does the accrediting body for your program require live proctoring or monitoring?
- Is your exam already in Canvas?
- Is your exam in another system (e.g., SPP, MH Connect, etc.)?
- Do all of your students have webcams and speakers?
- Do all of your students have robust, high-speed internet access?
- Does your exam require students to use special characters (language) or calculations?
- Does your exam require students to annotate or draw figures?
- Do all your students have a quiet, uninterrupted space to take the exam?

Unsupported options
Instructors may be offered other proctoring options by textbook publishers (e.g., Pearson is offering deals with ProctorU and Cengage is offering discounts for some Examity services).
- These are not supported by the University. eLearning and DoIT will be unable to provide any level of support for instructors and students.
- These will cost students extra money, which the instructor is required to track and report to the University Bookstores. Federal regulations require the total cost of each course be reported. UM has designated the Bookstores as the entity to track this information.
- Instructors will need to also ensure that their course is flagged in the Student Information Systems (MyZou, My Pathways, My Gateway, JoeSS) as requiring additional fees for proctoring. Instructors should work with their campus Registrar and course schedulers to ensure class attributes and class notes are up to date on each course section that require proctored exams.
- Instructors will need to add a statement regarding the proctoring method and fees in their syllabus.
- Additional policies may apply on each campus.
